These are some character sketches I did for a possible freelance children's book job that didn't end up panning out. I spent a little bit too much time on the colored designs before getting a final approval, but everything is a learning experience! I warped the birds natural markings into their clothes instead of giving them full blown costumes. I loved the way they turned out, which I suppose is what matters in the end.

It feels good to actually complete a piece of art and enjoy doing so, something I've been struggling with for a while (which my studio full of unfinished projects would attest to). I did this painting as a Christmas present, so there was a deadline! :) I wanted it to have the feel of an old botanical print, with a definite whimsical flair to it. It's pen and watercolor, 18x24.

I realize it has been a ridiculously long time since I last updated, so I'm uploading a slew of images: from my sketchbook, works in progress, and a few work sketches from Cedar Point.

This is a project I've been working on to get back into the swing of things, it's the line drawing for a menu cover for Midnight Hookah, a hookah bar off high street that also raises carrier pigeons. Hopefully a color comp will be up in the next couple days.

These are a couple of artist trading cards I did over the past few weeks, both in watercolor.

These are all from my sketchbook, this last drawing was a collaborative sketch with Jennifer Wrubleski! :)

I realized that I hadn't drawn myself in a while, so I sat down for a few hours and tried out the new and improved colored pencil tool in Painter 11! It's pretty awesome.

So it has been quite some time since I've posted much of anything, sadly. I have a few projects currently in the works (including a new site design!) but I thought I'd throw something up to show that I'm still alive. This isn't anything particularly serious, just a quick watercolor I did for a Christmas exchange, for I am poor.

Also, a bit of exciting news, one of my previous illustrations was put on the front cover of The Byron Shire Echo, an Australian newspaper. If you'd like to check it out, here's a link :) Much thanks to them for using my work!

This is the final piece for my Styles and Concepts class, the assignment is simply to do a piece for your portfolio. It's a poster for glass elevator rides powered by hot air balloons on cables that travel through the stratosphere! Mhm. I'll be doing this one digitally, I believe, in lieu of the comp. For the final, I'm expanding the composition and adding a decorative border, fitting the price into the border, redoing the type, and a few other minor things.

This is actually the first project from my Styles and Concepts class last semester, but I decided to rework the color and value structure in hopes to make it a more usable piece for my portfolio. It's a book cover redesign of Candide (one of my favorite books), bic pen and watercolor, 9x12. The scan got fuzzy in places, I'll have a newer, better image up soon.

Finished! I honestly don't want to look at this thing for a while. I have put waaaay too much time into it. It's not to the level I want, but I had issues in Painter with corrupted files, so I lost a lot of work time before I had to turn it in. I think I'm going to work on painting it in oils over winter break, since the semester is over and I'm finally feeling somewhat creative. Convenient, eh?

Hm. For some reason it looks rather pixelated.... It won't fix, so I appologize.

Illustration for my Styles and Concepts class. He's making us submit a piece for Society of Illustrators, so I basically just did what I wanted. This is about 60% done I would say. I'm digging in and adding way more texture to the branch in the foreground, and the wings are getting more transparent and intricate leaf veining. The little yellow baby bird is going to get turned around, too. Mmmmhm. Critiques welcome.

So it has been months since I've uploaded anything. Whoops. Not much coming out this semester, I suppose. I only have two illustration classes, so things are pretty slow. There is more, but here are some things to fill space while I work on more important projects....

These two are both out of my Digital Drawing Workshop class. It's pretty cool, we get to play around on new Cintiqs, which is always fun. They're both done in Painter X, the first one is about two hours, the second is five minutes.

Vi.R.uS Board Game

Finally, this project is done! This was for the Ad Graph group class, and the assignment was to design and build a board game. It has taken up so much of my life in the past week. But we sat down and played it last night and it was oodles of fun! It actually ended up involving a lot more strategy than we realized. These are pictures of the original design files, the whole game constructed, and then an example of some of the Hazmat cards, which are the negative cards.

The basic premise of the game is this: You start out as a weak Level 1 virus or bacteria, and you are trying to infect more and more people so you can become stronger and advance through the three different levels to ultimately become the Ebola virus :D These are done by cards that you draw when you land on certain spaces on the board that either give you infected people or take them away. Too bad our teacher took it home to grade. I want to play it again ;)

Only one more class of the semester! And it's tonight! Then getting ready to move, then moving, then working. Mmmmhmmmm!

A'Tuin Awakes Pt. 2

So maybe I will have time to post things as I get them done. This is the second part to the A'Tuin illustration, done two weeks earlier than it was supposed to be. Look at me! I'm doing things ahead! Not really, though, my teacher wanted it done by tonight, he wants to submit the pair for consideration for the student show. Woot! I have a few other pieces going in for consideration, too, some Illustration, Ad Graph, and figure drawing. Hopefully at least one piece gets in! Off to finish more homework before class.... ELEVEN MORE DAYS OF SCHOOL.

Old Schtuff

Paintings from my Model Painting class that took forever to put up. The color in the first is pure glaze; the grisaille was up here previously. The second one was half in studio half out, with the same model for three different poses. Both of them are kinda crappy pictures, but better slightly blurry than not there at all, no? both 22x28

I scheduled for next semester, I have the maximum 18 credit deal. Not sure how that's going to pan out, but at least I have a few classes I'm excited about... Illustrative Drawing for one, a Drawing Workshop Digital Style, and FREAKING GLASSBLOWING!!! AHH! excitement.

Caricature of Eddie Izzard, pretty much one of my favorite transvestite commedians :) For an illustration methods project in which we had to do a magazine cover with a famous personality. mmmhmmm. it's pen, watercolor, and digital.
I am so upset! I just found out from my friend that he's going to be in Columbus on May 13th, one day AFTER I move up to Cedar Point for my second season as a portrait artist there :( And there's pretty much no way I can get off. It makes me incredibly sad inside.

Soooo. It's spring break! And I'm super glad. A lot of fun things coming up. Sketch parties in fun places with friends from school, and hopefully doing a few paintings of my own in a series I've been wanting to work on lately. Who knows how much of that will actually get done. But it's the thought that counts, right?

I haven't posted any work for a while, so I thought I'd put this up. I'm drawing my brother, Kenny (against his will) for a figure drawing assignment that I procrastinated yet again... started about five hours ago :/... prismacolor pencils on toned canson, about 15x20 ish? approximately... the picture made the chroma and the shadows waaaay harsher, they're more subtle in the actual piece.

Oi. So, my sophomore portfolio review is in like, a week and a half. I am soooooooo not ready for it. I'm still trying to gather stuff together, and it's becoming more apparent how crappy my methods assignments are. It's sad that I'm getting better illustration stuff out of classes that are not core for my major. If it goes terribly, then maybe it'll motivate me even more to improve. So my thinking was, if I finally got one of these things, maybe it would motivate me to get working on some of my own stuff to put up or at least post my school work somewhere to get a decent critique (since there are maybe two classes I have in which those exist). So here goes nothing, I suppose.

I'm a week into my second semester of sophomore year. So far, it's promising to be much better than Fall. I have model painting and figure drawing; both teachers seem like they know what they're talking about and they're going to teach me a lot. At least it didn't seem hard to get back into the swing of things, considering I haven't had any form of those classes since last spring.

I didn't really feel like I had a lot of quality work come out of my assignements last semester, or even that I learned alot, especially compared to freshman year. But a lot of that had to do with my ridiculous lack of motivation, I think. So this time around I'm putting more effort into school work, and shelling out some of my own, too. I plan on doing some oil studies of friends in the next week or so before I get bogged down with homework, so I'll have those to post, but I think I'm going to wait for my throat to stop yelling at me so it can deal with the paint fumes. Meh.

Here are some projects from last semester to suffice until I can get some more recent stuff up.
